I am a fully qualified pre-accredited psychotherapist. I began my foundation training with the Tivoli Institute in Dublin in 2010, going on to complete their professional diploma in early 2014. I have worked with a wide range of clients, both in the short and long term, on a great variety of issues. I relocated to London in early 2015.
I am particularly interested in early childhood development and the impact early childhood experiences have on our adult lives.
I believe the therapeutic process is a collaborative venture, and place the relationship between the therapist and client at the heart of therapeutic success. I work in a non-directive way using the humanistic and integrative approach and draw on aspects of different therapeutic modalities to fit the current needs of the client, such as psychodynamic psychotherapy, gestalt, mindfulness. I will also sometimes incorporate techniques set out in the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model. I encourage creativity and welcome the opportunity to work creatively in sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
One of my main goals as a therapist working today is to remove any perceived secrecy around the process of psychotherapy. This in turn will hopefully help to end any remaining stigma attached to seeking help from a mental health professional. Because of this, I truly welcome any questions you may have about psychotherapy and will do my best to clear up any issues or uncertainty you have around it.
I have answered below some of the more practical questions that I get asked:
How long is each session and how much does it cost?
The initial consultation lasts between 30 and 45 minutes and is free of charge.
Each subsequent therapy session lasts 50 minutes and costs £40.
How often do I have to attend?
Clients attend one session per week. Each session will take place at the same time each week.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you will be unable to attend a session, please let me know as soon as possible. I require 72 hours notice to cancel a session without charge.
Can you tell me a bit about the structure of the sessions?
I work in a non-directive way. This essentially means that I let the client lead the session. I value the importance and significance of the unconscious and believe that everything that happens in each session is relevant. This is also true of the relationship that develops between the client and the therapist; it is important and crucial to effective therapy.
What can I expect from my first appointment?
The first appointment is a chance for you to discuss what you hope to get out of coming to therapy and to ask me any questions you may have, whether that is about my approach specifically or general questions about the therapeutic process. During this consultation you can expect me to ask you specific questions about your background, your current situation and anything else that may be relevant to the work we can do together. It is not a therapy session and so the format will feel different to any subsequent sessions. The appointment can last from 30 to 45 minutes and is free of charge. There is no obligation to continue with a course of therapy after this initial consultation.
How long will I have to attend therapy for?
This is a very open ended question and one that really is impossible to answer. Some people come to therapy with a very specific goal in mind or to work on a particular issue and wish to solely work towards that. While this is something I can help with, the psychotherapy that I practice looks to get to the root of problems and issues and gain a fuller understanding of the person as a whole and so the length of the process cannot realistically be predicted.
To give an example- someone who is recently bereaved and needs a place to come to offload and process how they are feeling may only wish to come for a limited number of sessions. Someone who suffers with long term anxiety or depression may need more extensive and in-depth psychotherapy to properly address their issues. This will be discussed at the initial consultation.
To begin with, I ask each client to agree to a minimum of 6 sessions. This commitment only has to be made after the initial consultation if you decide you wish to proceed. 6 sessions should allow both of us to get a sense of our ability to collaborate and work together on a more ongoing basis.
Your name is Aoife, that’s unusual… how do you pronounce it?
My name is Aoife and to most people outside of my native Ireland it certainly is unusual. It is pronounced E-E-F-A-H. I tell people it’s just like Eva with an ‘f’ instead of a ‘v’, or Fifa without the first ‘f’.
